Mary Fisher “May” Cox

Mary Fisher “May” Cox, 88, wife of the late Alfred Cox and resident of Ansonia, passed away Dec. 29.

She was born Sept. 16, 1926 in Ansonia, daughter of the late Thomas & Agnes McEwen Fisher.

She graduated from Ansonia High School, class of ‘44 and worked for Seymour Trust. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Ansonia.

She leaves two sons, Thomas Cox & wife Sherry of Ansonia and David Cox & wife Tina of Branford, CT., sister Nancy Seccombe of Ansonia and 7 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

She was predeceased by 2 brothers, Thomas & John Fisher and 3 sisters, Elizabeth Kells-Murphy, Ann McCarthy and Margaret Bresnahan.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at The Jenkins King & Malerba Funeral Home, 12 Franklin St. Ansonia. (www.jenkinskingfh.com) Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery.

Carol A. Altorelli, 65, of Derby, peacefully entered into eternal rest on January 1, 2015, at CT Hospice in Branford. She was the loving wife of the late Louis Altorelli.

Mrs. Altorelli was born in Bridgeport on Sept. 18, 1949, devoted daughter of the late Martin and Muriel Willever Lutson.

Carol was a 1967 graduate of Bunnell High School in Stratford. She was a Certified Nurse’s Aide and had a lifelong passion for nursing which was evident in her loving care of others.

Her memory will be cherished by her many nieces and nephews especially Matt and Michael. Carol’s family is grateful for the compassionate care of V.N.A. of Oxford, staff at Griffin Hospital and CT Hospice and the special friendship of Brenda.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend her funeral service on Saturday (TODAY) January 3, 2015 at 10:00 am in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia, with Rev. Janusz Kukulka, Pastor of St. Mary Church in Derby, officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery in Derby. Visiting will take place from 9:15 am until the service begins.

Walter J. Soldra

Walter J. Soldra, age 75, husband to Margaret Mitchell Soldra and resident of Ansonia, entered into eternal rest Dec. 31 with his loving family by his side.

He was born Aug. 27, 1939 in Derby, son of the late Walter Soldra & Sophie Opuszynski Soldra.

He worked for BFI formerly Archer for 30+ years as a foreman.

Walter attended the Church of the Assumption in Ansonia and was a member of the Milford Chapter of the Knights of Columbus, Norwood A.C., Subalpi Club and Ansonia Senior Center. He was also an enthusiastic UCONN Basketball, NY Yankees and NASCAR fan, and enjoyed going to Kaptan’s Restaurant in Ansonia and Fritz’s Snack Bar in Oxford.

In addition to his wife, he leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Cheryl (Albert) Szokol of Seymour, son Michael Dupre (Melissa), brother John Soldra of Ansonia, sister Marie Batza & her husband Rich of Oxford, several nieces & nephews and his “Grand dogs” Lexi, Girl & Cleo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015 at 9:30 a.m., friends are asked to go directly to The Church of the Assumption in Ansonia. Carl W. Schumacher

Carl W. Schumacher, age 62, of Woodbridge passed away on January 1, 2015 at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Born in Derby and raised in Ansonia, Carl was the son of the late William C. and Mary Trevelin Schumacher.

Carl worked at Yale University in the ITS department as a project administrator. An accomplished tenor, he performed in many local theater productions including West Side Story, Man of La Mancha, Oliver!, Carousel, and Jesus Christ Superstar. He immensely enjoyed tennis and was a member of the Ansonia Rod and Gun Club.

Carl is survived by his loving son, Kyle of Shelton, and his sister, Linda S. Salvano of Derby, many cousins, and dear friends.

In addition to Carl’s parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Susan M. Schumacher.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 9 from 4 to 7:30 p.m., followed by a celebration of Carl’s life at 7:30 p.m. at the Ralph E. Hull Funeral Home, 161 West Church Street, Seymour. Interment will be private.

Edith Harris, age 94, of Oxford Greens, Oxford, CT and formerly of Drexel Hill, PA, beloved wife of the late C. Joseph Harris, entered peaceful rest on Friday, January 2, 2015 at her home with Tinker and Ed where she resided for the past eight years.

She was born in Roxborough, PA on September 20, 1920.

Mrs. Harris is survived by her devoted daughters, Maureen Tinker Jacquette and her husband, Ed of Oxford and Cheryl Radlein of Montgomery, TX and her sister, Constance Wiley of Lafayette Hills, PA. She was also the loving grandmother of five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and two nieces and a nephew and their families.

Services will be held in private. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements have been entrusted with the Ralph E. Hull Funeral Home, 161 West Church Street, Seymour, CT 06483.

Anne “Dolly” Micknak, age 86 of Beacon Falls, entered peaceful rest January 3, 2015 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Waterbury; she was the beloved wife of the late John Micknak, Jr.

Mrs. Micknak was born March 4, 1928 in Derby, daughter of the late John and Sarah (Wilkenson) Miller.

Anne was retired from National School Studios, of Derby; she was an avid NY Giants Football Team Fan, and she enjoyed Country and Western Music.

Dolly leaves her loving family including her son, John “Jack” Micknak, III (Kathleen) of Beacon Falls, brothers, John Miller in FLA, and George Miller in AZ, her sisters, Gladys Warner of Seymour, and Alice Phipps of Shelton, grandsons, Jack and his companion Jill Sikora, Nick and Brian, great grandchildren, Jake and Lila, and several nieces and nephews.

Her brother, Tom Miller and sisters, Katherine Rollinson, and Marion Thompson predeceased her.

Anne D. Sember, age 88 of Derby, beloved wife of the late George S. Sember, died peacefully on January 7, 2015 at the CT Hospice, Branford.

Born in Derby on July 1, 1926, she was the daughter of the late George and Susan Hajduk Dudik, Sr.

Mrs. Sember was a lifelong Derby resident and homemaker. Her family was everything to her; she will be long remembered for her special love she gave to all.

Mrs. Sember is survived by her devoted daughters, Susan P. Tonucci and her husband, Frank of Oxford and Laura Brickett of Derby; sisters, Eileen Rogucki of Shelton and Dorothy Stevens of Seymour; cherished grandchildren, Jamie Haight of VA, Robert Brickett of Ansonia, Sally Pierro of Derby, and David Tonucci of Southbury; cherished great-grandchildren, Carl Jeffrey (C.J.) and Cooper Haight of VA, Shea, Jordan and Madison Brickett of Ansonia, and Louis, Vincenzo, Gina and Giuliana Pierro of Derby; as well as several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by sisters, Mary Pesta and Margaret Krilivsky and a brother, George Dudik, Jr. A Mass of Christian Burial (meeting directly at church) will be Celebrated at 10:30 AM in St. Joseph Church, 424 Coram Avenue, Shelton. Interment will follow in Mount St. Peter Cemetery, Derby.

Margaret L. Boath, age 76, of Ansonia, peacefully entered into rest on Sunday, January 11, 2015, in her home. She was the devoted wife of the late John A. Boath.

Margaret was born in Shelton on February 21, 1938, daughter of the late Raymond and Mary (Schmidt) Munson, and lived most of her life in Ansonia.

She worked for SNET, but loved being a mother and a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and loved Elvis. Margaret also loved penguins.

She is the beloved mother of John Boath and his wife Roberta and Janine Boath. She also leaves cherished grandchildren Ian and Kelsi and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her brother, Raymond Munson.

The Riverview Funeral Home, 390 River Road, Shelton, is entrusted with the arrangements. A graveside service will be held on Friday at 1 PM at Mt. St. Peters Cemetery, 219 New Haven Ave, Derby.

He was born to Joseph & Nettie Dow Jackson on Sept. 10, 1928.

He was a Navy veteran and worked for Hershey Metal Co.

He is survived by his cousin Geraldine Maynard and nephew Kenneth “Tommy” Jackson, both of Ansonia and several other cousins and friends.

Nicholas H. Horelick Sr.

He was born in Derby on August 13, 1946, son of the late Nicholas and Helen Ptak Horelick.

Nick worked as a Sub-Station Electrician for the United Illuminating Company. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy, holding the rank of Petty Officer, Third Class.

Nick was an avid golfer, loved riding in his Corvette and was a diehard New York Yankee and New England Patriot fan. He had a great love for music and was a drummer in several bands including Genesis, US Rhythm and the Decades.

Nick loved spending days with his cherished granddaughter Dakota. His happy-go-lucky personality and his fun-loving smile will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

Nick’s loving family, in addition to his wife Susan, includes his devoted son Nicholas Horelick, his wife Courtney of Seymour, and his cherished granddaughter Dakota Rose, his loving daughter Lisa Horelick, and his beloved sister Elise Casalan and nieces.

John David Simons, age 60, of Southington, formerly of Seymour, entered into eternal rest peacefully on Friday, January 9, 2015 in Hamden.

He was born in Conneaut, Ohio on April 26, 1954, beloved son of the late William and Claire Merlino Simons.

John had a great love for animals, especially his cats. He was a graduate of Seymour High School and worked as a Home Health Aide. John will be sadly missed by his family and many friends.

His loving family includes his brother James Simons and his wife Terry of Southington, his sister Claire Rillstone and her husband Don of Seymour, his niece Samantha Allard and his two cousins Peggy Murphy and Monica Deegan.

Salvatore Monopoli

Salvatore Monopoli, an 88 year old resident of Naugatuck and husband of 68 years to Dot Monopoli entered into eternal rest Jan. 8.

He was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania Oct. 26, 1926 to the late Anthony & Anna Monopoli.

Sal took much pride serving his country in the U.S. Navy during War II. He worked as a Foreman at Sikorsky Aircraft in the paint shop for the presidential helicopter.

He was an active member of St. Michael’s Church in Naugatuck where he served on several church committees’. Sal was an avid bowler and an officer of the Bowling Association at Valley Bowl.

In addition to his wife, he leaves 5 children, Donna Schuld of Naugatuck, Donald Monopoli, of Florida, Denise Kiley of Ansonia, Sandra Schuchmann of Oxford, Jerry Monopoli, also of Florida. He also leaves 3 brothers, Emmanuel Monopoli of Florida, Anthony Monopoli of Pennsylvania, & Frank Monopoli of Maryland, 10 grandchildren Dawn Nemeth, Michael Bernabucci, P.J. Schuld, Kali Kearns, Corey Schuld, D.J. Monopoli, Daniel Kiley, Tori Schuchmann, Danielle Kiley , Michael Schuchmann, Live In Aid Comfort Sam-Dadzie, and several nieces & nephews.

He was predeceased by 3 sisters and 4 brothers.

Velma Suzanne Campbell, former longtime Derby, CT resident, currently of Alaska, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2014 in Eagle River, AK, after fighting multiple cancers.

She was born November 10, 1934 in Brownsville, PA and was loved by all who knew her.

She wished in her passing days that all her family knew one simple thing; “That I love you all.” May she rest in peace now that her fight is over, but stay forever in our hearts as the purest soul we’ll all ever have the pleasure of knowing.

Mary A. (Passafiume) Johannson, 95, of Seymour, entered into eternal rest on January 12, 2015, at Griffin Hospital. She was the wife of the late Bertil I. Johansson.

Mrs. Johannson was born in Ansonia on Oct. 1, 1919, daughter of the late Joseph and Angelina DeLutri Passafiume.

A resident of Seymour since 1967, she was employed as an inspector for B.F. Goodrich in Shelton for 21 years until her retirement.

Mary was a member of the Ansonia and Seymour Senior Centers, the Yolanda Girls, and enjoyed traveling to Sweden to visit her in-laws.

She is survived by a beloved sister, Louise Mascolo of Ansonia and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by brothers, Michael, Andrew, Carl and Louis Passafiume and sisters, Josephine Zuraw and Bessie Passafiume.

Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday January 14, 2015, from 4:30-7:30 pm in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. On Thursday, her funeral will be held at 9:15 am from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Holy Rosary Church in Ansonia. Interment will take place in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery in Derby.

Deborah L. Wood-Holloway, 61, unexpectedly entered into eternal rest on Jan. 4, 2015, while visiting in Michigan.

Deborah was born in Bridgeport on Jan. 17, 1953, daughter of the late Donald and Marilyn Fraiser Wood.

She is survived by two loving sons, Jason M. Wood (Susan) of Naugatuck and Christopher M. Daly (Barbara Richard) of Pinckney, MI, a loving daughter, Stacy Figuenick-Ballard of West Haven, a brother George Wood, a nephew, Keith Wood, both of Waterbury and many friends.

She was predeceased by a brother, Jeffrey Wood and a sister Robin Wood.

Friends and relatives are invited to attend a memorial gathering on Friday Jan. 16, 2015, from 5:00-7:00 PM in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. Anna M. Dempkowski, 96, of Ansonia, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Sunday evening January 11, 2015, at Birmingham Health Care Center in Derby. She was the beloved wife of the late Stanley J. Dempkowski.

Mrs. Dempkowski was born in Stratford on April 18, 1918, daughter of the late Emil and Susan Saksa Hovanec.

Anna enjoyed crocheting and crafting.

She is survived by a loving and devoted daughter, Elaine D. Mortensen and her husband Drew of Ansonia and a cherished grandson, Andy Mortensen and his wife Dr. Melissa Moore of Milford.

Zdzislaw “Ziggy” J. Janusz

Zdzislaw “Ziggy” J. Janusz, age 85 of Ansonia, beloved husband of Elizabeth Pendagast Janusz, entered into eternal rest January 10, 2015 at his home.

Ziggy was born in Trzanic, Poland on July 8, 1929, son of the late Nicholas and Sophie Polchopek Janusz.

During his life, he worked as a millwright rigger/machinist for Farrel Corporation, New England Engineering, and MIR for many years until his retirement. He was also a member of the former Fraternal Order of Eagles of Derby.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, John Antonelli and his wife Patricia of West Haven; his daughters, Tina Ross of North Haven, and Margaretann Antonelli of Norwalk; his grandchildren, Melanie Glaser, Douglas Glaser, and Anthony Ross Jr. all of North Haven, and Daniel Pivola III of Shelton; his sister, Betty Greco of Woodbridge, and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his daughter, Dawn Pivola; his brother, Adolf Janusz; and his sister, Felicia Zogel.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 2 PM in the James T. Toohey & Son Funeral Home, 92 Howe Ave., Shelton with Rev. Janusz Kukulka officiating. Calling hours will be held from 12 PM until the time of the service.

Peggy Anne Kuzia, 87, entered into eternal rest on December 14, 2014, at Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, AZ. She was the beloved wife of the late Edward Kuzia.

Mrs. Kuzia was born in Ansonia on April 8, 1927, daughter of the late William and Anna Wasik Kucejko.

A resident of Seymour for fifty years, she was employed as a registered nurse at Hewitt Memorial Hospital in Shelton for 25 years, until her retirement.

Peggy was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Ansonia and an avid gardener.

She is survived by a son, Edward Kuzia of Scottsdale, AZ, three daughters, Ann Kuzia of Bethany, Kathleen Press of SC and Robin Illing (James) of Cornelius, NC, 9 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Peggy’s Memorial Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday January 24, 2015, at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Church, 32 Jewett Street in Ansonia. Burial will be private.

Amy Carrig, age 90, of Derby, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Griffin Hospital. She was the beloved and devoted wife of the late William Carrig.

Amy was born on June 23, 1924, daughter of the late Amy and Maurice Conroy. She worked as an administrator and engineer at SNET for many years before her retirement.

Amy had a passion for gardening, arts & crafts, and was an avid reader. She also loved entertaining and spending time with family and friends.

Amy was predeceased by her sister Janice Graboski and survived by several cousins, her niece Jean Malone of Keller,TX; nephews John Graboski of Brewster NY; and James Graboski of Seymour CT, as well as many good friends.

Friends may call on Tuesday January 13, 2015 from 4 to 7 pm at the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home 253 Elizabeth St. Derby. Her funeral will leave the funeral home on Wednesday the 14th. at 10:30 am for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am in St. Mary Church, Derby. Burial will follow in Beaverdale Cemetery, New Haven.

Michelina J. (Cassetti) Klabonski

Michelina J. (Cassetti) Klabonski, 82, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Friday afternoon, January 16, 2015, at Griffin Hospital, with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late John A. Klabonski.
Mrs. Klabonski was born at home in Ansonia on August 9, 1932, daughter of the late Giuseppe and Ignazia Giordano Cassetti.
A resident of Ansonia her entire life, she was raised in a traditional old-world Italian family. Mickey was employed in the business office at Griffin Hospital for many years until her retirement and was a lifelong communicant of Holy Rosary Church in Ansonia.
She was very loving and caring woman who would go out of her way for anyone and cherished her relationships with her large family and many close friends. She enjoyed cooking, especially Sunday dinner, and taking care of her grandchildren.
Her loving family includes two sons, Anthony T. Klabonski (Cindy) of Sandy Hook, Paul J. Klabonski (Elaine) of Beacon Falls, a daughter, Karen A. Harney (Greg Sr.) of East Haven, grandchildren, Ashely Smith (Zack), Amanda Klabonski (Fiancée Ian), Anthony J. Klabonski, Kyla Williams, Christopher Klabonski, Gregory Harney Jr., Alexi Harney, Lindsey Harney, great-grandchildren, Harper Smith, Jaylen and Trevor Williams, Sienna Viola, sister in law, Lillian Cassetti of Ansonia and several nieces, nephews and friends.
She was predeceased by a brother, Salvatore Cassetti and a sister, Concetta “Kay” Malerba.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday January 19, 2015, from 3-7 pm in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. On Tuesday, her funeral will be held at 9:15 am from the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Holy Rosary Church in Ansonia. Interment will take place in Mt. St. Peter Cemetery in Derby.
The family sends a heart-felt thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff of Griffin Hospital especially the hospice team for their wonderful care.
