Obituary: Joseph F. Willets, 44, formerly of Ansonia

Joseph F. Willets, 44, formerly of Ansonia, foreman for R&N Construction Group, former owner of A-1 Modern Concrete in Ansonia, died Nov. 5, at his home in North Carolina.

Born March 24, 1971, in Arizona, son of Frank and Nancy (Apanavich) Willets of Ansonia.

Besides his parents, he is survived by his brother, John M. Willets and his wife, Shannon, nieces, Morgan, Carmella and Aislin Willets, all of Shelton, many aunts, uncles, cousins and his longtime companion, Leslie Matejak of Derby.

Predeceased by maternal grandparents, Joseph and Anna Apanavich and paternal grandparents, Carmella and Frederick Willets.

Services: Thursday, Nov. 12, 7 p.m., Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia. Visiting hours: Thursday, 4-7 p.m., prior to the service.

James Bishop, 74, of Seymour, formerly of Easton and Monroe, husband of the late Phyllis Nadeau Bishop, died Nov. 5, at home, following a sudden illness.

Born Oct. 9, 1941, in Bridgeport, son of the late James E. and Irene (O’Hara) Bishop; U.S. Army, Vietnam War.

Survived by children, Scott and his wife, Kimberly Bishop of Bethany, Yvonne and her husband, William Lorincz of Seymour, James and his wife, Lisa Bishop of Monroe, eight grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Private graveside services will be held in CT Veterans Cemetery, Middletown.

Obituary: Samuel R. Volo, 92, of Orange

Samuel R. Volo, 92, a resident of Orange for over 50 years, entered into eternal rest on October 24, 2015, at Masonicare in Wallingford. He was the beloved husband of the late Virginia Forsberg Volo.

Mr. Volo was born in Ansonia on October 1, 1923, son of the late Joseph and Josephine Scarpulla Volo. He earned his Master’s Degree from Columbia University in New York and was employed as a physical education teacher for the Ansonia Board of Education until his retirement.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Volo and sisters, Catherine Volo and Michelena Martino.

There will be no public funeral service. He will be privately buried alongside his wife in Orange Center Cemetery in Orange. The SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia has been privileged with the arrangements.

Nicolas Paul Schmidheini, of Oxford, son of William and Shannon (Smith) Schmidheini Sr., died Nov. 3, at Griffin Hospital.

In addition to his parents, his family includes two brothers William P. Schmidheini Jr. and Jacob William Schmidheini both of Ansonia, a sister Grace Mackenzie Schmidheini of Oxford, his maternal grandparents Walter (Patricia) Smith of Naugatuck, and Barbara Smith of Oxford, his paternal grandparents Louis (Kathy) Schmidheini Sr. of Florida and Margaret Schmidheini of Derby, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Funeral Service in memory of Nicolas will be held Friday, November 13, at 11 a.m., at The Cornerstone Assembly of God, 656 Oxford Rd., Oxford with Pastor Christopher Willis, officiating. Interment will follow in the family plot at Mountain Meadows Cemetery, Seymour.

Obituary: Deirdre Ann Loftus, 40, of Seymour

Deirdre Ann Loftus, 40, of Seymour, died November 5, 2015, at home, following a long and courageous battle with brain cancer.

Dee was born in Derby on January 11, 1975, beloved daughter of Mary E. Loftus of Seymour and the late Andrew Robinson.

She graduated from Smith College in Massachusetts where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology and most recently was employed as a job coach at Easter Seals in Denver, CO. Dee was a free-spirit and always lived life to its fullest. She strived to make this world a better place to live. She loved to travel and while she was in college spent time studying in Uganda. Her greatest love was spending time with family and friends and being in the mountains of Colorado. She was brutally honest and enjoyed getting into discussions about life, social justice and anything one would like to talk about, especially with her brother in law, Donnell.

In addition to her mother Mary, she is survived by a sister, Yvette Thigpen and her husband Donnell of Meriden, brothers, Carl Cheeseboro and Robert Robinson of Ansonia, eight aunts, especially Kathleen Emmerson (Robert) of Seymour and Willie Lee of New Haven, an uncle, seven nieces and many cousins and friends, especially Tamara Goff of Golden, CO, Cristina Dos Santos of Summerfield, NC and Lauren Marcous of East Hampton, MA. She was predeceased by maternal grandparents, Edward and Mabel Loftus and paternal grandparents, William and Leila Lee.

Obituary: Theodore John Krupa, 94, of Ansonia

Theodore John Krupa, 94, of Ansonia, husband of the late Emma Ferko Krupa, died Nov. 3, at Griffin Hospital.

Born in Ansonia on April 10, 1921, he was the son of the late Peter and Mary Gluse Krupa.

Mr. Krupa was a lifelong resident of Ansonia and member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church where he was active in the Knights of Columbus, Catholic War Veterans and the Holy Name Society. He was a proud U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII and retired from Northeast Utilities as a chief customer service representative following 37 years of employment.

Mr. Krupa is survived by his children, Mary Ann Drenkhahn, of Ansonia, Patricia Sbrega and her husband, Raymond of Ansonia, Theodore “Skip” Krupa and his wife, Bonnie of Cairo, Egypt and Peter Krupa and his wife Channel of CA; sister, Virginia Hylwa of FL; 11 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 1 great great-grandson.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter, Susan Krupa and brother, Walter Krupa.

Mary Catharine Kennedy, 97, of  Oxford, wife of the late  William C. Kennedy Sr. died Nov. 5,, at Torrington Health and Rehabilitation  Health Center, Torrington.

She was born in Derby, CT on July 27, 1918, daughter of the late John and Catharine Lynch Kerwin.

Mary graduated from Derby High School. Mary was a buyer for Malley’s Dept. Store, New Haven  in their Book Dept. She then worked for the Town of Oxford as Head Librarian for many years. She was a member of the Oxford Senior Center. Mary was a homemaker who was an avid  reader and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved going to Orleans, Cape Cod and loved to watch the sunset at Skaket Beach.

Her family includes her devoted son William C. Kennedy Jr. and his wife Marie of Litchfield, a loving daughter Geraldine Pierce of Acton, MA., eleven cherished grandchildren and twenty-four  cherished great-grandchildren.

She was  predeceased by her son John Kennedy, a son-in-law John Pierce and grandson Michael Pierce.

Obituary: Richard “Dick” Kisson, 77, of Seymour

Richard “Dick” Kisson, 77, of Seymour, died Friday, November 13 at Griffin Hospital after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family.

Dick was born in Derby on April 29, 1938, son of the late Samuel and Anastasia (Gowcheck) Kisson, both of Seymour. A graduate of Seymour High School, he served in the United States Army Reserve and saw active duty. Dick was retired from the Seymour Public Works Department.

In addition to his wife of 53 years, Dorothy, survivors include his children, Nancy Kisson Pelletier, Virginia “Ginny” Duke and her husband David, Richard “Sam” Kisson and his wife Rachel, and Adrienne Kisson; siblings Virginia Kisson, Barbara Busillo, and Lawrence “Gary” Kisson; grandchildren Adam and Anastasia Duke, Nina Pelletier, and soon-to-be Baby Kisson; and best coffee buddy James “Mac” McNamara. He was predeceased by sisters Florence Kisson and Vivian Haskedakes.

Dick was a board member of the Seymour Land Trust and spent many hours creating nature trails with his friend Mac. He was also recognized by former Attorney General, Senator Richard Blumenthal, for preserving the historic footbridge over the railroad tracks on Main Street. The bridge is now named Kisson’s Crossing in his honor.

His family wish to thank the staff of Griffin Hospital for their wonderful care.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm in the chapel of the Miller-Ward Funeral Home, 260 Bank Street (RT 67, across from Klarides Village) Seymour.

A Memorial Service in Celebration of Richard’s Life will follow at 7:00 pm with Reverend Father Patrick Burns, Pastor of Three Saints Orthodox Church of Ansonia, officiating. Full Military Honors will be accorded by Emil Senger Post 10 American Legion of Seymour.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Richard’s name to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101-9929 or through the funeral home.

Madeline C. Castiglione, 69, peacefully entered into eternal rest on November 17, 2015, at Abbott Terrace Health Care in Waterbury, with her loving family by her side.

Madeline was born in Derby on October 29, 1946, daughter of the late Isadore “Jerry” and Maria Stella Sardo Castiglione. A resident of Ansonia for most of her life, she was employed as a nurse’s aide.

She is survived by a loving sister, Paula Ann Pastore of Wolcott, nieces, Paula-Ann Quezada and her husband Otto of Waterbury and Lynne-Ann Pastore of Wolcott, a nephew, Joseph C. Pastore Jr. of Waterbury, great-niece, Amanda Pastore, great-nephews, Matthew Quezada, Joseph Pastore and Nicholas Pastore and several cousins.

She was predeceased by her brother in law, Joseph C. Pastore Sr.

Obituary: Edward Perlie Judd, 87

Edward Perlie Judd, 87, passed away in Sarasota, FL on November 18, 2015.

Born in Bridgeport, CT on December 2, 1927, he was the son of the late Perlie and Valera Hallowell Judd.

After graduating from Ansonia High School, Mr. Judd served in the U.S. Army prior to joining the family’s company, Judd’s Express. He was later employed by Central Rigging Co. where he was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers until his retirement. Mr. Judd was active with the AM Vets 302 and the Loyal Order of the Moose and was an avid New York and Connecticut sports fan. He retired to Milo, Maine and North Port, Florida over twenty years ago.

He is survived by his sons, Edward P. (Irene) Judd, Jr. of Auburn, Maine and David P. (Nancy) Judd of Wolcott, CT. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren, his step children from the Brackett family, and his companion, Sandra Clark. Mr. Judd was predeceased by his brothers, Robert and Richard Judd, his sister, Marjorie Blaze and his beloved partner Marjorie Brackett, who passed in 2001.

Friends and family may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015 at the Cody-White Funeral Home, 107 Broad St., Milford. Military Honors and interment will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at King’s Highway Cemetery, 271 Cherry St., Milford, CT.

Obituary: Louis J. Kudej, age 84, of Derby

Louis J. Kudej, age 84, of Derby entered into rest on Monday, November 23, 2015 at Griffin Hospital.

He was born in Derby, on March 9, 1931 son of the late John and Helen (Gola) Kudej and was a lifelong Derby resident.

Louis served as a Sergeant First Class for the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was an employee at Sikorsky Aircraft for many years until his retirement.

Louis enjoyed going to sports events and watching them on television. He also enjoyed walking.

Louis is the sister of Helen Knapp and her husband George, Alfreda Levinsky and her husband Stanley and Frank Kudej and his wife Alma. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews who he adores.

Louis is predeceased by four brothers, Chester, Benjamin, Walter and Henry Edward Kudej, and three sisters, Gladys Kwiatkowski, Ann Kowalczyk and Frances Miklinevich.

Friends may call on Friday from 4 to 7 PM. at the Edward F. Adzima Funeral Home, 253 Elizabeth St., Derby. On Saturday, his funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:00 AM for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM in St. Michael’s Church. His burial with military honors will follow at St. Michael Cemetery.

Tina was born in Bridgeport on March 15, 1958, beloved daughter of Charles L. Dawid of Ansonia and the late Frances Reylea Dawid. She was a graduate of Seymour High School.

She is survived by a brother, Nicholas A. Dawid and his wife Basilla of Ansonia, a sister, Lori Smith and her husband Ken of Higganum, a nephew, Aiden Padilla of TN and nieces, Alysia Padilla of TN, Angela Dawid of Ansonia and Jaclyn Padilla of VA.

Obituary: Julius I. Douglas 87

Julius I. Douglas 87, husband to Anna Mae Thomas Douglas and resident of Ansonia, passed away on Nov. 20, 2015.

He was born June 20, 1928 at home on (the former) Broad St. Ansonia, to the late Grant Douglas and Minnie Gatison Douglas.

Julius served in the U.S. Army and worked as an Art Teacher for the Westport Public Schools. He attended Ansonia Public Schools and wrote the song for his graduating high school class of 1946. Julius an active member of the community, served on Ansonia’s Board of Education, in particular the building committee for Ansonia’s new high school.

He was a regular blood donor for over 30 years. He was a member and former Exulted Ruler of The Copper City Elks I.B.P.O.E. of  W., as well as the founder and director of Copper City Elks Drill Team.  Julius sang in several gospel quartets and was an active parishioner, trustee and Sunday school teacher of Macedonia Baptist Church in Ansonia.

In addition to his loving wife Anna Mae, he leaves his daughter Lydia Douglas- Cordova, sister Lily Douglas, granddaughters Chrystal Ferreira and Alicia Marie Cassisi and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Julius was predeceased by his son Maco James, 3 brothers Matthew, Grant “Jack” and James Douglas and 2 sisters Minnie Louise Douglas and Alean E. Thomas.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 28th at 12 NOON at Macedonia Baptist Church in Ansonia. Calling hours are 10:00 a.m. to 12 NOON. Burial will be private.

Cleveland “Boone” Toney, 76, of Derby, died Nov. 10.

He was born August 12, 1939 in Hartsville, South Carolina son of the late Julius & Edna Daniels Toney.

Cleveland served in U.S. Army and worked as a fork lift operator for Ansonia Copper & Brass Co. in Ansonia.

He leaves his former devoted partner Jean Douglas of Derby, Jean’s daughters Sheonte Douglas of Derby & Tamera Harris of Ansonia and their children Jymere, Daniel, Alonna & Amara. He also leaves behind a host of family & friends.

Obituary: Mitar “Mike” Damjanovich, 75

Mitar “Mike” Damjanovich, age 75, beloved husband of Danuta “Donna” Opalach Damjanovich of Seymour, died peacefully on November 21, 2015 at Griffin Hospital with his family by his side.  

Born in Yugoslavia on November 12, 1940, he was the son of the late Milo and Ivana Zeklevic Damjanovich.  

Mr. Damjanovich was orphaned at an early age and was raised by his grandmother in Montenegro, part of the former Yugoslavia. He served in the Yugoslavian Merchant Marines and fled his communist homeland when he was granted political asylum by Senator Thomas J. Dodd in the United States in 1964. Settling in the valley, he resided in Derby and Ansonia before moving to Seymour in 1980.

Mr. Damjanovich worked as a plumber for the Black and Decker Co., formerly of Shelton for 31 years, until the time of his retirement in 1999. Known throughout his neighborhood for his magnificent garden, Mr. Damjanovich would generously share his garden’s bounty with all. As an avid card player, he and his buddies would enjoy Friday evenings sharing in spirited conversations, laughs and dozens of Dunkin Donuts while at the poker table- a tradition he passed onto his sons and oldest grandson who now enjoy Sunday evenings spent this way.

A fan of the UCONN Huskies, NY Mets, Jets and Knicks, he could also be found watching these and other sporting events with his family.  He treasured children, animals (especially dogs) and considered his home his sanctuary where he will be long remembered for his special love for his wife and family.  As a father, he accepted his children for their uniqueness and individuality, always encouraging and supporting them to follow their own path with his guidance ever present.  

In addition to his beloved wife of nearly 49 years, he is survived by his devoted children, John (Barbara) Damjanovich of Seymour, Dajana Damjanovich of Oxford, Milo Damjanovich of Oxford, and Ivana (Robert) Sinclair of Seymour; cherished grandsons of whom he was so proud, John, Jr. and Robert Damjanovich, both of Seymour; as well as several nieces and nephews abroad.  

He was predeceased by his sister, Joke Bajkovic and uncle, Steve Damjanovich.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at 8:00 AM from the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia, and 9 a.m. in Three Saints Orthodox Church, 26 Howard Avenue, Ansonia.  Interment followed in Mountain Meadows Cemetery, Seymour.

Obituary: Helen R. Flood, 95, of Townshend, VT., formerly of Ansonia and Seymour)

Helen R. Flood, age 95, of Townshend, VT (formerly of Ansonia and Seymour) beloved wife of the late William P. Flood died on November 27th, 2015 at West River Valley Assisted Living Center in Townshend, Vermont.

She was born in Ansonia, Connecticut on November 16th, 1920 to Jacob and Mary Rotko Nyscot.

Mrs. Flood was a graduate of Ansonia High School class of 1938. She was a lifelong member of Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Church and member of Sts. Peter & Paul Ukrainian School. Helen was active in the Mother’s Club, Ladies Club, and Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. During WWII and while her husband served overseas, she was an Air Raid Warden and worked in Sponge Rubber, a Raytheon Company during war time.

She loved to sing in her St. Macrina’s Church Choir. Later in life, she became a Senior Citizen Volunteer and offered her time at the Shelton Connecticut Center for eleven years. A member of the choral group, Young at Heart Line Dancers, Helen sang and danced with her late husband’s Senior Center Band, “The Vagabonds”. They visited and performed at all nursing and senior housing centers in the Valley. She was an avid gardener with an amazing green thumb. Her beautiful flowers surrounded her home inside and out. When she moved to Seymour to be closer to family, she brought many of those flowers with her there and then later into her apartment in Vermont. Her friendliness, cheerfulness, generosity and kindness was felt by all who knew her.

Mrs. Flood is survived by her daughter, Patricia and son-in-law Earl Holtz of West Halifax, VT, granddaughter Laura and husband Ronald Raffone of Seymour, CT, granddaughter Kathleen and husband James Corris of Cheshire, CT, as well as four great grandchildren, Noah and Autumn Raffone and Benjamin and Allison Corris. Helen is also survived by her niece Carol Stumpf and her husband Joseph of Maine and niece Sylvia Foster and husband Fred of Florida.

She was predeceased by her husband William of forty five years, her great granddaughter Karen Lynne Holtz, her sister Stephania Cirkot, and brother-in-law Stephen Cirkot.

Funeral services will take place on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at 9:00 AM from the Wakelee Memorial Funeral Home, 167 Wakelee Avenue, Ansonia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 11:00 AM in Sts. Peter & Paul Church, 105 Clifton Avenue, Ansonia. Interment will directly following Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Derby. Family and friends may at the funeral home from 9:00 to 10:45 AM prior to Mass; Panikhida will be at 10:00 AM.

Emilie Arndt, 72, of Shelton, wife of the late Ernst Arndt, died Nov. 25, at Griffin Hospital.

Born in Austria on May 18, 1943, daughter of the late Eduard and Emilie Baldaszti.

Survived by sons, Robert E. Arndt (Tatiana) of Derby and Brian M. Arndt of Shelton, daughters, Christine Hogan of Shelton and Suzanne Simmons (Jeff) of Seymour, a brother, Eduard Baldaszti of Austria, five grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Linda R. Zalenski, 66, of Ansonia, peacefully entered into eternal rest on November 27, 2015, in the comfort of her home with her loving and devoted sister by her side.

Linda was born in Derby on December 15, 1948, daughter of the late Edward J. and Carmella Fattarusso Zalenski.

A lifelong resident of Ansonia, she earned her Master’s Degree from Southern Connecticut State University. She was employed as a special education teacher for over 40 years, where she taught in various school districts. Linda was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in Ansonia.

She is survived by her beloved sister, Karen A. Zalenski of Ansonia.

She was predeceased by an infant brother and canine buddies Beth and Sandy.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral on Tuesday December 1, 2015, at 10:00 am (PLEASE MEET DIRECTLY) at St. Joseph Church, 32 Jewett Street in Ansonia. Interment will follow in the family plot in St. Michael Cemetery in Derby. There will be no visiting hours. Gertrude M. Devlin Venice, 93, of Ansonia, affectionately known as “Nana,” died Nov. 28, at Griffin Hospital, with her family by her side. She was the wife of the late Samuel R. Venice.

Mrs. Venice was born in Brooklyn, NY on June 6, 1922, daughter of the late Bernard and Rose Ann Murphy Devlin. She enjoyed going to her prayer and craft groups.

She is survived by sons, Girard S. Venice (Sharon) of Sanford, NC, Robert Venice (Debra) of Johnston, RI and Gary J. Venice (Christine) of Spring City, TN, a daughter, Judith A. Motel (George) of Goshen, CT, a sister, Marie Dziadik of Warren, CT, 8 cherished grandchildren, 6 adoring great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 2 brothers and 2 sisters.

Visiting will take place on Wednesday December 2, 2015, from 10:00-11:00 am in the chapel of the SPINELLI-RICCIUTI/BEDNAR-OSIECKI FUNERAL HOME, 62 Beaver Street in Ansonia. At 11:00 am, a funeral service in celebration of Gertrude’s life will take place with Deacon Richard Renker officiating. Interment will immediately follow in St. James Cemetery in Naugatuck. Alonzo Styles Jr. age 76, husband of Dossie London Styles and Ansonia resident, passed away at Griffin Hospital Nov. 27, 2015.

He was born July 22, 1939 in Waterbury, CT.,  son of the late Alonzo Styles Sr. & Julia Jackson Styles of Ansonia.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked as a machine operator for New Haven Copper Co. in Seymour.

In addition to his wife and mother, he leaves his children John & Alisa Weaver, both of Ansonia, and 5 grand & 2 great grandchildren.

Memorial services celebrating the life of Alonzo Styles will be held on Thursday, December 3rd at 10:00 a.m. at The Clinton A.M.E. Zion Church in Ansonia. Burial will be private.

The Jenkins King & Malerba Funeral Home, 12 Franklin St. Ansonia, is entrusted with arrangements.
